With their addictive hooks and friendly beach bum vibe, Grouplove is a band that walks the line between being totally carefree and fiercely ambitious. Rolling Stone called them “shaggy arena rock for the pool-skating set, like Arcade Fire with a seventh-grade sense of humor,” which is probably the most perfect description anyone could come up with. They’ve got amazing pop songwriting skills and stadium-ready energy, which makes them a force to be reckoned with.
While Grouplove might be California-based these days, the band’s members all met in a pretty unlikely place: the Greek island of Crete. With the exception of vocalists/adorable couple Christian Zucconi and Hannah Hooper, they were all strangers visiting a European retreat for artists when something clicked during a jam session on the beach. A year later, they had all moved to Los Angeles and were writing and recording songs in drummer/prodcuer Ryan Rabin’s home studio.
While everybody already knows songs like “Tongue Tied” and “Colours,” you don’t fully understand Grouplove until you’ve seen them perform live. They’ve practically lived onstage for the past five years, touring constantly with no sign of slowing down anytime soon. Earlier this year, they teamed up with director Sam Erickson on I’m With You, a documentary that captures the hard work and insane energy that goes into their powerful live performances. Whether you’re a longtime fan or checking them out for the first time, the film will give you a whole new respect for the band.
Can’t wait for Grouplove to make their way back to St. Louis this fall? Check out the I’m With You documentary and keep last year’s Spreading Rumours spinning all summer long. LouFest will be here before you know it!
