Into The Fire with Falls

Who would have ever thought some of the best Americana music would come from almost 10,000 miles away? From sunny Sydney, Australia, acoustic duo Falls have been causing quite the stir on this side of the Pacific with their Into The Fire EP and tours with The Lumineers, Of Monsters & Men, and Delta Rae.

Melinda Kirwin and Simon Rudston-Brown had been romantically involved before coming to the conclusion that they were “better bandmates than bedmates.” The ups and downs of their relationship served as the inspiration for many of the disarmingly honest, close to the bone lyrics on Into The Fire, making some of the songs emotionally challenging for the duo to perform live.

But even though things may not have worked out in the romance department, you can’t deny that there’s still something special between the two of them. Simon and Melinda are simply natural songwriting partners who can paint a vivid picture with lyrics like “My head feels full of static/Time is standing still/The clouds form shapes and shadows on my hands on the wheel.” Of course, nothing beats those flawless harmonies that bring to mind legendary country collaborators like Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris. These two are a musical match made in heaven.

NYLON called the title track “the perfect tune for those of us on the anti-Valentine’s Day train.” But whether you’ve just had your heart broken or are simply in the mood for some beautiful folk, the Into The Fire EP needs to be on your summer listening list. If you think those harmonies sound great on the record, just wait until you get to hear them live at LouFest!
